What to Wear

A strict dress code is enforced. Shoulders and knees must be covered for all visitors.|Lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton are recommended for hot summer months.|Comfortable walking shoes are absolutely essential as you will be on your feet for several hours.|Avoid large bags or backpacks, as they may need to be checked in at the cloakroom, causing delays.

Planning

Historical Context

The Sistine Chapel was constructed between 1473 and 1481 under the commission of Pope Sixtus IV. However, its fame comes from the frescoes commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508. Michelangelo was tasked with painting the 12 apostles on the ceiling but convinced the Pope to let him pursue a much grander scheme depicting scenes from Genesis. Decades later, Pope Clement VII commissioned him to paint 'The Last Judgment' on the altar wall, a testament to his enduring genius and the shifting artistic and religious tides of the time.

Photography Tips

  • Photography is strictly forbidden inside the Sistine Chapel to protect the artwork and maintain a reverent atmosphere.
  • For the rest of the museums, disable your flash as it is not permitted.
  • A wide-angle lens is excellent for capturing the scale of the grand halls like the Gallery of Maps.
  • Use a polarizing filter to reduce glare on glass cases and enhance colors.

Insider Tips

  • Arrive at the meeting point 15 minutes early to ensure a stress-free start.
  • After the Sistine Chapel, look for the special passage that sometimes leads directly to St. Peter's Basilica, allowing you to skip the separate, long security line outside.
  • Download an offline map of the Vatican Museums; it's easy to get lost.
  • Use the restroom before entering, as facilities can be far apart and have long lines inside.

Our Partners

  • We are proud to partner with leading tour platforms like GetYourGuide and Viator to bring you a curated selection of the highest-rated Sistine Chapel experiences. By booking through us, you get the benefit of their secure booking systems and extensive network of professional local guides.

Fun Facts

  • Michelangelo initially turned down the commission to paint the ceiling, as he considered himself a sculptor, not a painter.
  • The Sistine Chapel's dimensions are said to be an exact replica of the Temple of Solomon from the Old Testament.
  • It took Michelangelo 4 years to paint the ceiling (1508-1512) and another 6 years to paint 'The Last Judgment' (1535-1541).

Worth every single cent!

Don't even think about visiting without a skip-the-line ticket. We walked past a queue that looked like a 3-hour wait, straight in. Our guide, arranged through the GetYourGuide partner we booked, was an art history student and her passion was infectious. Seeing the Sistine Chapel in person is something I'll never forget.

Absolutely Breathtaking, But Crowded

The art is 5 stars, no question. The Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms are stunning. The only reason for 4 stars is how incredibly crowded it was, even with a timed entry ticket. It was hard to stand still and just absorb it. My advice: book the earliest morning tour you can find on this site. It made a huge difference.

An Efficient and Enlightening Tour

The booking process was seamless, and the e-ticket worked perfectly. Our guide was organized, knowledgeable, and kept our group together expertly through the crowds. He provided context that made Michelangelo's work even more impressive. Seeing The Creation of Adam with my own eyes was a dream come true.

Spiritual and Beautiful

As someone who appreciates art and history from all cultures, this was a deeply moving experience. The scale of the frescoes is impossible to comprehend from pictures. Booking a guided tour was the right choice; otherwise, we would have been lost in the vastness of the museums. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Rome.

Good Tour, Follow the Rules

The tour was very well-organized. A warning to fellow travelers: they are VERY strict about the 'no photos' rule in the chapel. I saw guards remove people. Respect the rules and just enjoy the moment with your own eyes. The skip-the-line feature alone made the ticket price a bargain.

Highlight of Our Italy Trip

My wife and I booked the early access tour and it was the best decision we made. Being in the Sistine Chapel with only a handful of other people was magical. The silence before the main crowds arrived was profound. The Vatican Museums are huge, so having a guide to lead you to the highlights was essential.

Incredible Detail and History

The artistry is beyond words. I spent so much time looking at The Last Judgment. Our guide shared stories about Michelangelo's rivalry with Raphael, which added a fun layer to the tour. The entire Vatican is a treasure. Booking was easy and having the ticket on my phone was very convenient.

Well worth it, but be prepared to walk

An amazing collection of art. The Sistine Chapel is of course the highlight. Just be prepared for a lot of walking! Wear your most comfortable shoes. The tour moves at a steady pace but you are on your feet for 2-3 hours straight. The ability to skip the massive line was fantastic.
